Is there such a thing as a dogfish?

Q: My mom and I were going to an aquarium and she was like "I can't wait to see some dogfish!" and then I said "But they don't exist!" and then she said "Ya they do!! There's a catfish, so there must be a dogfish!!" blah blah blah. So I am writing this

A: They do exist, they're related to sharks, but her reasoning (there's a catfish so there must be a dogfish) is wrong.

Sharks of the Jersey Shore

A list of sharks who make occasional or regular appearances off the coast of New Jersey include most of the known species in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States Most sharks familiar to New England are present , the blues, Makos, baskers, the occasional thresher, moles rarely straying south in winter, and great whites on their way to Cape Cod for the summer. Spiny dogfish also occur during their migration between New England and North Carolina, but do not seem to stick around very long. Some southern sub-tropical species visit the Bank during the summer, including Blacktip, sharpnose sharks, scalloped hammerhead, smooth and lemon sharks. Jenkinson Aquarium Point Pleasant houses a lemon shark (you can take) that was given by a fisherman after being captured nearby.
